FaceBook Advertising vs Google Advertising

Have you advertised on Facebook yet?

Just 3 weeks back I was surfing through alexa and noticed that Facebook had grabbed Yahoo’s spot of the 2nd most visited site in the World! – All this in just a few years. I have been following its’ traffic since a while now and the graph has been a beautiful 60 degrees. It’s got most people hooked. Everyone’s on it. It’s a great media people love to spend time on. Also, I guess it just plays on the voyeur nature of most human beings. Anyway, taking Facebook’s success and our love for it as a given, let’s explore advertising on Facebook.

 Setting up an account

It’s fairly easy to set up your account. You just have to click on advertise (link at the footer), create an ad, choose your target criteria, enter your card details and voila. It involves no human intervention unless you want the large banners that keep showing up on the right side. For those, you can get in touch with Komli. They manage Facebook’s advertising clients in India.

 Facebook versus Google

Unlike Google advertising, what Facebook lacks is context. Sure you can choose keywords, but it’s very unlikely that someone will find keywords related to their category or brand, unlike in Google. Being a search engine, almost all sorts of questions are punched in Google. Facebook is, well, a social site and therefore it has its limitations in terms of targeting. So, Facebook doesn’t work well contextually for many brands and therefore, if you’re looking for sales -oriented marketing, it’s not the place to spend your budget.

Orkut vs. Facebook Traffic for India

Brand(k)ing

What Facebook is great for, though, is branding. If you bid a decent amount as recommended by the engine, you could be sure of getting millions of impressions. We advertised on it and it may sound unbelievable, but we got a single digit e-CPM! Imagine getting such a rate for the kind of traffic, page views and involvement Facebook enjoys. Apart from this, the way the ads are placed, they create pretty much look like content. It ensures that it’s not obtrusive and yet stands out with the thumbs up and down signs. I would recommend that you create an ad that doesn’t sound like one, but sounds more like a testimonial of sorts. If you say something like “The largest and the best …blah blah”, it does sound like an ad and looses credibility in Facebook, a place where people are used to reading frank thoughts friends have on their mind. Any sort of superlative or made-up comments will go unnoticed. So, write the ad as if it’s an endorsement from someone. It could read like “I just came across this wonderful site that helps do…”. That may grab more attention.

 Clicks or eyeballs?
Usually, you won’t get a lot of people clicking on your ads, which is good to an extent because you get free branding. To ensure that you don’t get too many clicks, make sure that your ad is not a mystery. Put things up front so that the curious jacks don’t go around clicking since each click could cost you Rs. 5+. Obviously the knife cuts both ways. If your CTR is too low, they’ll stop showing your ads. So you need to figure a way to keep afloat the CTR bar. If you’re a website, I recommend you mention the site URL upfront so that people can remember it. Always add your logo to the ad since that’s what most people will remember.

 Verdict
Go ahead and spend a % of your budget on this great site, assuming you want to do a branding exercise. Just be objective and track the conversions using analytics so that you can maintain some level of ROI even though your e-CPM is low. You should decide upfront how much you want to spend because once you start tracking the number of impressions your ad gets, it can be quite tempting to keep pumping in more funds.

Mark Zuckerberg is Not the first FaceBook User.....????

Facebook ...one of the most popular social networking site..!! When i am facebooking today suddenly i got one strange doubt...!!Who opened the first FaceBook account...???Then i thought Mark Zukerberg is the founder of this company ....so he will be the first FaceBook User..!!But surprisingly he is not...!!Strange....!!is n't it??Every Facebook user has one FaceBook id by which his profile information will be stored in FB database. So in this case if Zukerberg is the first user of FB he should have faceBook id=1 in facebook Database. But his ID is 4 in faceBook Database.I was able to get the list of all users in FaceBook with their corresponding FaceBook Id's and Their Names in FaceBook. Here is the sample list of first-50 FaceBook Users With their FaceBook Id's and their Corresponding names.First 50 Facebook users are all co-founders and first employees of Facebook. You can see some FaceBook id's are not there ..!!(Ex:1,2,3)..!!I don't have much idea why these id's are missing.Probably these users might have deleted their account long back before the new features were added or Facebook might have used these id's for testing purpose.

PlayCez: Upcoming Era of Recommendation Engines

Had this been a decade ago, people would have been satisfied with whatever info you provide them irrespective of the fashion in which you serve them. But technologies emerge around you and people are seeking for the best of the best out there. This is where the concept of Recommendation Enginescome into play. Recommendation Engines are not new to this world, but the density of users seeking these have been on rise.  Geo location based recommendations need pioneers at work to promise the service. Talking of these services, I need to talk about an upcoming "Visual Recommendation Engine", PlayCez.

PlayCez is a web application, that recommends places to people based on the interests and the likes of their pals. PlayCez takes the inputs from the user in well designed and structured way to provide them the most appropriate places accordingly. The application uses latest technologies out there to make users feel the freshness of the web. Some quick technologies, I can point out to - Google Maps v3, JQuery and not to miss, their mobile site is  through JQuery Mobile, which will be launched very soon.

The developers are keeping every aspect of this application quite different and innovative. For example, the error page of this application is amazingly built and poured in the dynamic entity with the usage of Google Maps API and unlike the boring "Oops 404" pages, you see across the web. You can check the error page over here. As said earlier, the application uses the Google Maps v3 for recommending the users the places in their neighborhood with beautiful overlays embedded into the maps with several options. If you are really interested in Maps v3, here is a small snippet of code and make similar kind of  pages for yourself.

Is the world big enough to find another Steve?

There are millions of people out there who never met Steve in person (just like me) but still they feel the loss today. This man was kicked out of the company he founded and yet he was confident enough to come up with company like pixar, such a caliber he had. Today his death created a huge void in this world and I am not sure if I can see another Steve in my lifetime. I don't know about Albert Einstein (1879-1955) nor I heard his speech but I do know about the Einstein (1955-2011) of our era and did hear his speeches. I am proud to say that I am of his era.

The apricot orchards where he grew was now called Silicon Valley, a home place for many companies.  Now the question stays intact and do we see another Steve from silicon valley. There are many people who have tasted success but is that mere factor to replace such a visionary? In Jobs words, 'Stay Hungry Stay Foolish', who has that hunger? Here are the cards we should look after Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook - Man who made people use internet to meet their friends, Larry-Sergey who didn't stop by just launching a search engine to find data.

Finally, I am happy that a person who fused the creativity into technology, the person who has no foes but fans, the person who resembles in every product that the company launched, who seek perfection in the design is of our times. Thanks for everything you have done to this world. R.I.P

Introducing Google Scribe in Blogger

Hello Bloggers! Do you ever find yourself writing slowly, staring at a blinking cursor or looking for words to express yourself? Today we are happy to announce the availability of the text suggestions and autocomplete feature of Google Scribe, which is graduating from Google Labs and can now be found in Blogger in Draft.

Google Scribe helps you write more efficiently by suggesting common words and phrases as you type. Google Scribe supports Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish. The language is automatically detected using the text in the post.

Enabling Google Scribe is easy. Simply click the pencil icon in the toolbar within the Post Editor.

After Google Scribe is turned on, suggestions will appear in gray as you type, and you can accept them by hitting the spacebar or by typing a punctuation mark, such as a comma, period or question mark.

If you would like to receive more than one suggestion at a time, select "Show Multiple Suggestions" from the drop-down menu next to the pencil icon. You will then be able to see several options in a drop-down menu as you type.

Here are some keyboard shortcuts you may find handy. If you use a Mac, you can use the shortcuts below by replacing Ctrl with Command key (or 'Apple' key)

  • Ctrl-j to enable and disable Scribe
  • Ctrl-Shift-j to select and deselect multiple suggestions
  • ESC to temporarily remove a suggestion
  • TAB to restore a suggestion
